The word hypocrite in Matthew 6 comes from the Greek word for stage actor. This concept of wearing a mask and acting out righteousness leads to this underlying concept that beneath the mask, you may not really be the person you want the world and God to believe you to be.
The Message version of Matthew 6:3-4 says: “When you help someone out, don’t think about how it looks. Just do it—quietly and unobtrusively. That is the way your God, who conceived you in love, working behind the scenes, helps you out.”
Have you thought recently about whether your internal or behind the scenes work matches your publicly seen work? Do you find that you need praise from others to want to serve them? How can you seek to find validation in Christ instead?
